The only laboratory offering certification of mechanically attached roofing systems and adhered roof assemblies that comply with the CSA A123.21 Standard.

Exp's roofing laboratory provides testing services to determine the resistance of roofing systems to wind uplift forces. We use state-of-the-art equipment to test both mechanically attached and adhered roof assemblies against CSA Standard A123.21: "Standard test method for the dynamic wind uplift resistance of membrane-roofing systems".

Evaluation of roofing systems under CSA Standard A123.21

To help meet the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada 2005, Division B, Subsection 4.1.7 for "wind load", the Special Interest Group for Dynamic Evaluation of Roofing System (SIGDERS) was created at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to design equipment that could simulate the dynamic effects of wind gusts on different types of roofing systems.

The CSA Standard A123.21-04 was initially created for mechanically attached roofing systems and the testing method involved a total of 5,000 wind gusts in a predefined sequence. When another method was subsequently developed for testing adhered roofing systems, the Standard was renamed CSA A123.21 and the new testing protocol, named Method #2, involved 2,875 wind gusts on five levels. Calculation Method
Determining the required wind resistance of a roofing system using the calculations specified in subsection 4.1.7 of the National Building Code of Canada 2005 with any level of certainty can be fastidious:

P = Iw * q * Ce * Cg * Cp

P = specified internal pressure acting statically and in a direction normal to the surface, either as a pressure directed towards the surface or as a suction directed away from the surface,
Iw = importance factor for wind load, as provided in Table 4.1.7.1,
q = reference velocity pressure, as provided in Sentence (4),
Ce = exposure factor, as provided in Sentence (5),
Cg = internal gust effect factor, as provided in Sentence (6), and
Cp = internal pressure coefficient, based on the average values of the surface considered.

To fulfill the requirements of this long and fastidious calculation method known to produce a high error rate, the precursors of this application (CSA A123.21) have developed a practical tool that is now widely recognized in the roofing industry.
