The Richelieu Valley Wastewater Treatment Board’s new biosolids anaerobic digestion plant has completely eliminated landfilling of sewage sludge from the adjacent wastewater treatment plant.
Expected to lower operating costs by 50%, the biosolids plant reduces natural gas consumption for heating, decreases sludge disposal costs and creates revenue through treatment of septic tank sludge.
The plant produces biogas using the adjacent wastewater treatment plant’s sewage sludge. The biogas is then used to dry sludge for agricultural reuse – resulting in zero landfilling. Sludge drying also reduces the trucking required for transport to an agricultural recovery site by more than 600%.
