Responsible for control of all process operations for the 5th largest refinery in the US, the Whiting Consolidated Control (Cube) redesign provides design and engineering solutions to support 24/7 operations.
In order to positively impact the performance of operators within the Cube, the redesign was based on human factors based design criteria for control centers in the petrochemical industry and addressed four key areas needing improvement: lighting, sound, heating and ventilation, and operator comfort. In order to thoroughly understand the operations and functions of the user group, the design team engaged in the day-to-day operations of the Cube before working on design solutions.
The project involved the re-configuration and upgrade of operator consoles and the means and methods by which the various functional groups communicate and exchange information within the refinery system.
