Upgrades to the iconic Quincy Station provide modern accommodations for one of Chicago’s busiest train stations.
Originally built in 1897, Quincy Station is one of Chicago’s original Loop elevated stations. Modernizations to this historic landmark provide improved accessibility for the public. EXP recognized the iconic and historic significance of the station and worked with the preexisting design aesthetic while designing the more modern upgrades.
With annual ridership of over 1.4 million, Quincy is one of the busiest among all Loop stations. To accommodate these commuters, EXP’s work made the station fully accessible for all with the installation of two new elevators and new glass and steel walkways that connect the elevators to existing stationhouses. Upgrades to these stationhouses include the electric system and LED lighting throughout, facilitating a more rider-friendly experience. Wood millwork, custom stamped metal ceilings, replicas of historic lighting fixtures and historic style signage and advertising displays connect riders with the station’s history.
EXP worked closely with the Historic Preservation Agency and Chicago Landmarks Commission to review and approve the various upgrades. The station is deemed the best surviving example of the Loop’s elevated stationhouses dating back to the 1900s.
