The new 320-bed Humber Meadows Long-Term Care Home at Humber River Hospital fills a prevalent need for long-term care facilities in Ontario. This project was part of the Accelerated Build Pilot Program by Infrastructure Ontario, which aims to recommit resources to long-term care in the region. Under design-build partner EllisDon, EXP provided mechanical, electrical, IT, security, structural and energy modeling design services for this critical project in North York, Ontario.
Alleviating long-term care capacity issues
The creation of Humber Meadows Long-Term Care Home addresses capacity issues within Ontario’s long-term care system and decreases patients’ time spent on waitlists. The location of this building is significant due to its proximity to a Reactivation Care Centre, which helps patients who are waiting for a long-term care facility, but no longer need acute care.
The new building is approximately 250,000 square feet and is six stories. The first floor acts as a space for social activities and services for residents, including visiting rooms, a dining room and a hair salon. The next five floors include resident rooms with spaces for dining, activities and medical care.
Meeting modern design standards was a priority for this project to ensure comfort for residents and employees of the long-term care home. These features include private or semi-private rooms, full air conditioning for the building, a higher level of emergency power backup and advanced technology systems.
By assisting in the addition of hundreds of new beds to Ontario’s long-term care system, EXP continues to strive to create healing environments and improve patient outcomes.
