This first-of-its-kind Northstar Operations Center (NOC) provides a facility for operations, maintenance, living and emergency services for the Prudhoe Bay field. The NOC for British Petroleum is located on a man-made island in the Beaufort Sea, three miles offshore from the Alaska North Slope. Originally fabricated in Louisiana, the NOC was towed on a barge across the Gulf of Mexico, through the Panama Canal, north along the West Coast through the Alaska Sea and the Bering Strait to its destination.
Working and living on the manmade island and subject to extreme weather conditions, personnel could be required to remain indoors for several days. The combined operations facility was designed to accommodate up to 50 people with living quarters, a medical clinic, offices and control room, and a maintenance shop. In the unlikely event of an upset condition, a garage facility holds the Arktos emergency escape vehicle at the ready 24/7, 365 days a year.
