Improvements to this treatment plant help preserve a vital fishing fjord – maintaining a community lifeline for the hamlet of Pangnirtung.
Pangnirtung is a remote hamlet on Baffin Island in Nunavut. As a critical part of the region’s economic infrastructure, the community relies on the Pangnirtung Fjord to provide receiving water for treatment and to sustain their vibrant fishing industry.
With its far north location, delivery of parts and equipment, intermittent communications and extreme weather can pose significant challenges. Responding to these challenges while minimizing impacts to the fjord were a priority. The solution combined a compact membrane bioreactor system with innovative use of existing building space and tankage to provide a highly effective treatment system within a minimal building envelope.
Capable of outputting the highest quality of effluent to the local receiving water, the upgraded system now significantly reduces waste material being discharged to the Pangnirtung Fjord.
