The Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster is one of the oldest hospitals in British Columbia. Since 1862, the hospital has provided primary, secondary and tertiary care services. With a focus on a variety of medical and surgical specialties, this regional hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in the Fraser Health Authority system.
The hospital has been undergoing a multi-phase redevelopment to respond to current and future demand, address critical infrastructure issues and progress quality care for the region. The redevelopment brings a new 388-bed acute care tower with acute and critical care spaces, emergency department, operating rooms, interventional radiology and cardiology suites, recovery suites, underground parking and a rooftop heliport. Existing hospital buildings will be upgraded to support the new beds and services in the acute care tower.
EXP provided environmental services to support the redevelopment, and to prepare the site for compliance with provincial soil and groundwater standards. Specific tasks included stage 1 and 2 preliminary site investigations, hydrogeological review, remediation plans, and preparation of a contaminated sites professional opinion letter. Detailed hydrogeological evaluation was conducted by drilling around areas with underground tunnels. These services helped construction to begin on the new acute care tower following approval from the BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.
