Design of the Sûreté du Québec police station brings a sustainable new public facility to the regional county municipality (RCM) of Memphrémagog. The 1600 square meter (17,220 SF) facility combines sustainable features such as geothermal systems with the use of regional materials like granite and wood. The EXP team addressed stringent design standards for police facilities, while meeting goals for LEED certification and mitigating the site’s uneven contour and contaminated soils.
The interior of the building is distinguished by its modern and warm design, as well as natural and wood-like hues. The interior’s exposed framework is made of glue-laminated wood. Use of this durable material brings increased insulation and higher fire resistance – contributing to the building’s overall thermal performance. The new facility features barrier-free design with accessible spaces. Works of art enrich the aesthetic and cultural environment of the site.
Sustainable design
Design of the LEED Canada-NC Silver certified building integrates numerous sustainable measures such as the use of a geothermal system and the use of regionally sourced products. A 225 cubic meter retention basin manages stormwater while trees and vegetation in the parking lot help reduce heat island effects. The EXP team overcame a number of challenges through rigorous planning, technical expertise and close collaboration between all stakeholders.
