To make use of undeveloped land adjacent to the University of Calgary, EXP designed the infrastructure for a multi-use development to revitalize the area. The new University District is one of the first LEED-ND Platinum certified developments in Alberta. With over 8M SF of residential development and non-residential areas, the development includes office, entertainment and retail spaces. Features such as walkability, accessibility and pollution prevention measures earned University District this LEED distinction.
EXP was the lead engineering consultant, responsible for project management and engineering related to the construction of new utilities and surface infrastructure and their integration with existing infrastructure. Design of innovative streetscapes is interwoven through existing development and structures, as well as carefully planned streets to allow for efficient commuting around the area.
Since neighboring land was already occupied by existing entities, the team coordinated with nearby businesses and Alberta Children’s Hospital to ensure the project did not interfere with their operations. With close proximity to parks and access to environmentally friendly modes of transportation such as bike lanes, pedestrian paths and bus routes, University District residents and visitors can easily travel around the area and enjoy surrounding nature. This blend of nearby parks, pedestrian paths and green and urban space creates a unique and sustainable area for residents of Calgary to live, work and socialize.
