Through re-alignment of Illinois Route 178, the passageway through the Village of North Utica acts as the northern gateway to nearby Starved Rock State Park. Through a series of meetings with the Village of North Utica, its stakeholders and the community, a long-term vision was created that ties the new alignment of IL 178 with the downtown while successfully rerouting heavy truck traffic out of the main downtown thoroughfare.
The diagonal geometry of the re-alignment created opportunities for interesting open spaces that serve as welcoming gateways and pocket parks. A unified streetscape plan was created to cohesively link the new roadway and its newly formed spaces with the existing fabric of North Utica’s downtown.
