Built in the heart of the Detroit campus, the new Wayne State University Data Center is part of an eruption of new construction in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood. Enhancing both the building’s visual appeal on the street corner and the data center’s computing capabilities, the new 11,000 SF facility data center is connected to the existing Computer Services Center (CSC) and is capable of supporting 500kW of IT capacity and scaling up to 1,500kW of IT capacity. The site around the data center is designed for physical security of the critical facility, but also provides a public park space for all of Wayne State’s students and neighbors to enjoy!
The capacity improvement will allow the WSU C&IT computing capability to grow for years to come. EXP provided highly efficient and scalable power and cooling technology to allow WSU to incrementally grow into their facility – eliminating downtime and operating a highly efficient facility. The facility’s air handling units are N+1 redundant and can provide airside economization cooling to the data center approximately 85% of the year.
The data center is a steel structure with precast concrete walls and roof, and was designed to sustain EF-3 tornado rated winds. Sustainable features in this LEED Silver building include water-efficient landscaping, LED lighting with occupancy/daylight sensors, efficient HVAC equipment, efficient envelope design and efficient plumbing fixtures.
