A new two-lane bridge with public spaces is set to be constructed in the Bayview community in Airdrie, Alberta. EXP is providing prime consulting services for civil design and construction of the bridge, as well as geotechnical design and materials quality assurance testing.
Our teams are combining expertise in transportation and infrastructure, geotechnical and materials testing and land development, to deliver a unique feature in the master planned community. The two-lane bridge spans the major causeway of an interconnecting system of canals as an overall stormwater facility, designed with pre-cast elements and cast in place concrete piles, but with aesthetics intended to replicate the appearance of a cast-in-place concrete arch.
This design meets the architectural controls of the overall community, while acting as a focal point for residents. The design also includes 2.5-metre-wide walkways on both sides, connecting to a regional multi-mode system of pathways, and clearance below allowing for recreational use of the canal in all seasons, including ice skating and boating.
“This project presents unique challenges, requiring the integration of architecture and aesthetic elements to both highlight and showcase the surrounding community while also ensuring an efficient structure for both design and construction. As the third vehicular bridge designed by EXP in this community, it is intended to enhance and emphasize the community’s landscape design, while providing vital pedestrian and vehicular connectivity,” said Structural Engineer Martina Verboom, P. Eng.
This project will enhance infrastructure in the area, provide new public spaces for residents and further improve community mobility. EXP is committed to contributing to projects that enhance surrounding communities and ensure safer infrastructure.
