EXP is proud to celebrate the recent award wins of two Chicago Transit Authority stations. The temporary Red Line Bryn Mawr station received the International MasterPrize Award in the transportation category and the Green Line Garfield station was recognized with the international Built Design Award (BLT) in the Bridges and Public Architecture category. These distinguished awards recognize design excellence and add to the growing list of awards for these stations.
The temporary Bryn Mawr station was created to provide service to transit riders amidst the construction of the CTA’s $2.1 billion Red Purple Modernization project. The design of the station was intended to appeal to the community, despite being temporary. The station is one of four projects worldwide recognized with the International Architecture MasterPrize in the Transportation category and also won the AIA Chicago People’s Choice Award this past fall. The Architecture MasterPrize Award celebrates architectural design excellence across 41 categories, with each award-winning project selected by a jury of architects, industry professionals and academics. “We are proud to continue celebrating the Bryn Mawr station and the opportunity that a temporary structure created for a dynamic and colorful small building to the CTA users and the neighborhood,” said Senior Design Architect Alzira Maldonado Protsishin, AIA, NCARB.
The Garfield Green Line station was awarded the BLT Award in the Bridges and Public Architecture category, an award that recognizes all the professionals involved in the project and the project’s ability to adjust to urbanization challenges and inspire the next generation. The Garfield Green Line station was renovated in 2018 to preserve the existing 1892 structure as a community-based arts facility and create a new active station for the community. “The station offered the opportunity to reexamine a historically significant part of Chicago’s transit past and renovate an operational facility for the community’s benefit. With a renewed emphasis on art, the station features mural-styled artwork from world-renowned artist Nick Cave that transforms the station into a contemporary passageway,” said EXP’s Architectural Designer Sara Fetterolf. The Garfield Green Line station has also been recognized with design awards from AIA Illinois and AIA Chicago.
“EXP’s design team is honored to celebrate these awards alongside the CTA, as they represent the collective commitment to outstanding design and noteworthy transit architecture,” said Tom Hoepf, FAIA. EXP is proud to work on significant transportation projects to enhance the communities that depend on them.
