EXP was awarded a sole-sourced contract by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) for the I-215 Segment 5 landscape improvements. In previous segments, SR-210 was extended from the Los Angeles San Bernardino County Line (Segment 1) to the I-215 Interchange, expanding the lane to three general-purpose lanes and one HOV lane in each direction. To enhance the aesthetics of the interchange, EXP will replace the plants removed during initial construction and incorporate drought-tolerant plants, drip irrigation and native wildflower seeding to minimize maintenance and water use. EXP will work with Caltrans District 8 in collaboration with landscape architects David Evans and Associates. Segment 5 was the final stage of the I-215 Widening project at the SR-210 interchange.
The sole-source contract for Segment 5 was a direct result of EXP’s work for SBCTA on the I-215 Bi-County Landscape project, which is similar in scope and began three years ago with an anticipated completion date of June 2023. EXP provided project management, project reports, engineering plans for traffic control, construction staging, construction signs, utilities and stormwater services. “Our performance on the I-215 project led to our selection for the Interchange Segment 5 portion,” said Vice President, Inland Empire Area Manager Gabriel Rodriguez.
“A major part of the project is building consensus between different stakeholders, balancing budgets and clients and managing expectations from each funding source and client,” said Gabriel.
