EXP has contributed project management services to various components of the design and development of Bombardier’s new Global Aircraft Assembly Centre at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The project is a milestone for the Canadian aerospace industry, as it will produce the most advanced and efficient business jets in the world.
The construction of the Global Manufacturing Plant was the main focus of the project and had a construction cost of about CAD $525 million. Bombardier’s new plant design will optimize the final assembly operations for all global business jets through the use of state-of-the-art technology, such as automated positioning systems that are guided by laser-measuring technology.
EXP’s infrastructure construction team and designers completed the Early Works which included Storm Water Management Studies, design and contract administration including underground temporary ponds, site grading, Offsite Servicing including Water, Wastewater, (Airside connections at Pearson Airport to Region of Peel Trunk Sewer), Traffic impact & signal timing modelling and Transportation to accommodate 2500 employees for both City of Mississauga (Bramalea Road, Alstep Dr & Menkes D) and the Region of Peel (Derry Road), soil management and earthworks, in which design, geotechnical (quality assurance testing and inspections) and contract management services were provided during construction. The team also completed the Facility concept design and detailed design (SMEP to 30%), Contract Administration and Change Management during the project duration.
EXP provided expertise on tanks and site services which consisted of contract administration and site inspection including geotechnical (quality assurance testing and inspections) during the construction of four underground concrete tanks and onsite services such as storm and sanitary sewers, watermain and fire line systems. The construction team also performed in the capacity of the Contract Administration Consultant during the construction of the new facility, which covers a 41-acre site and is 800,000 SF.
The collaboration between the client and partners was a crucial aspect of this project. EXP’s Senior Director of Construction, Dudistir Gookul said, “Working with the talented team from Bombardier over the past years has been very beneficial, their experience in project management and process controls made for great team support. We’re proud to have worked on this major project.”
The past five years of EXP providing services resulted in the completion of the two main buildings, Final Assembly Building and Flight Test Hangar, which were constructed along with auxiliary buildings and site features that Bombardier now operates with a skilled work force of about 2500.
EXP is proud to be part of this landmark project and the lasting impact it will have on the industry and Mississauga.
