Since 2013, the Alaska liquid natural gas (LNG) Project set out to create a solution for the long-sought goal of unlocking – and bringing to market – the vast natural gas resources on Alaska’s North Slope and realizing the economic, environmental and security benefits that would flow from these valuable resources. On May 21, 2020, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) authorized Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC) to move forward with the Alaska LNG Project for the liquefaction and export of Alaska North Slope gas. The FERC’s approval of the $43B project makes it the largest integrated LNG project it has authorized in the US.
The Alaska LNG Project is composed of liquefaction facilities on the Kenai Peninsula, designed to produce 20 million metric tons per annum (MMTPA) LNG, as well as an 807-mile pipeline able to transport up to 3.9 billion cubic feet of gas per day from a new Alaska North Slope Gas Treatment Plant to liquefaction facilities and additional pipelines.
To achieve a milestone of this magnitude, collaboration was key. EXP’s experts in Alaska were actively involved in the project since the beginning, providing project management, strategic regulatory and permitting leadership and guidance. EXP also delivered environmental services including surveys and studies, FERC application, major project permitting and regulatory services, as well as addressing constraints, mitigation measures and alternatives. EXP’s vice president of the Arctic region, Chris Humphrey, who led EXP’s involvement on the Alaska LNG Project shared, “About six years ago, our team joined the Alaska LNG client project team of experts committed to seeing this project reach approval. Reaching this critical FERC authorization is the result of laser-focused, schedule-driven efforts of that project team, along with continued due diligence from AGDC and local and national agencies, who see the project as a safe and environmentally beneficial solution for Alaska and the nation. We’re proud to have been a part of the process to reach this exciting project milestone and are excited to work towards continued investments in the safe delivery of Alaska’s natural gas.”
EXP will continue to be involved in the Alaska LNG Project as it moves towards construction.
