Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre will offer space for patients to receive holistic care and for experts to conduct cutting edge brain disease research. The Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre will be a state-of-the-art, three-story, 121,000 square foot facility where specialists in psychiatry, neurology, imaging, pharmacology, neurosurgery, geriatric health and more can conduct research and provide treatments for various brain disorders. The collaboration of these different specialists in one building helps bridge the gap between mental and physical care for patients.
EXP provided structural, geotechnical and hydrogeological engineering services for this project. A long-time client of EXP, Sunnybrook is located in Toronto, Ontario and is a renowned research and academic health science centre.
The new building will offer the space and resources needed to provide patient care, including 47 hospital beds, activity rooms and exercise facilities. An open concept main entrance and atrium, three exterior courtyards and relandscaping of adjacent areas will also be accomplished through the project. In addition to the newly constructed three stories and one story below grade, the building includes built-in provisions for future expansion and addition of four more floors.
EXP’s healthcare projects focus on improving care for individuals and the greater community. The Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre will carry out the same patient-focused mission in a space for research and care that will support the well-being of the community, province and beyond.
