EXP selected to play leading a role in the construction of biomethanization plant in Quebec

September 18, 2024

EXP has been selected to bring their expertise to a new waste-to-renewable energy processing plant in Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, Quebec. The project will be led by Convertus Group and Énergere, a subsidiary of Ainsworth. The teams will design, build, finance and operate the plant under a 20-year operating contract.

EXP’s Industry, Buildings, Energy Transition, Infrastructure and Earth + Environment teams will collaborate to design the plans and specifications for the future biomethanization and composting plant. The plant will process and convert residential organic food waste into renewable natural gas and compost.

Drawing on years of expertise in designing renewable energy production systems, the collaborative team will play a leading role in this innovative large-scale waste-to-renewable energy processing plant that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

“At the plant, organic matter will be processed using an innovative technique called ‘tunnel treatment,’ ensuring optimal management and transformation of the processed material. This two-stage process recovers organic matter that could not be converted to gas via biomethanization in the first stage, and turns it into compost. Tunnel treatment is a circular solution for recycling organic waste that’s highly beneficial for the environment,” explains Director, Industry Stéphane Chabot. The technique is common in Europe, but not yet widely used in North America.

The first stage of the project is scheduled to start by March 2025, with commissioning scheduled for September 2026.
