Toronto’s first 7-Tesla (7T) MRI facility is coming to Sunnybrook Research Institute. EXP is providing structural and geotechnical services for the renovation and construction of a new single-story 7T MRI facility in the building’s E Wing. Sunnybrook Research Institute is the research component of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
7T MRIs are high-strength machines that can take clearer, more precise images and detect abnormalities that lower-strength MRI machines may miss. This new facility will enhance the hospital’s research and treatment capabilities for central nervous system diseases such as strokes, multiple sclerosis and some cancers.
The facility includes an MRI scan room, a control room, an equipment room and a mechanical and electrical room. The scan room is designed to meet strict performance standards and to cater to the advanced equipment it will house, including a 60,000 kg vibration-isolated inertia slab to support the MRI gantry and table. The project also includes the construction of an underground service tunnel connecting the Brain Sciences Building to the basement of the E Wing. This system will be used to route mechanical and electrical services as the Sunnybrook site undergoes further development in the future.
EXP’s healthcare projects focus on designing and constructing facilities that allow for excellent care for patients. “This project is paving the way for the future of healthcare. The new 7T MRI will revolutionize the way healthcare teams are able to research central nervous system diseases. We are proud to support Sunnybrook in further advancing the excellent care that patients receive,” said EXP’s Associate, Structural Division Luke Bowen.
