EXP announces the addition of Robert ‘Bob’ Theel, FAIA as vice president of federal design strategy. Bob will work from EXP’s Chicago office and focus on strengthening national design partnerships and establishing opportunities with federal clients.
Bob brings over 40 years of experience in government administration and program delivery with the US General Services Administration (GSA). His contributions have left a legacy of high-performance, cost-effective and impactful public buildings and programs including the GSA’s legacy Design Excellence, Building Design Standards and First Impressions programs. Bob joins as EXP continues to expand its strategic plan to broaden service offerings to federal clients across North America.
“Bob’s career and expertise demonstrate a passion to create and maintain distinguished federal facilities,” said EXP’s Senior Vice President Jefrey Jakalski. “As we continue to expand our team of leaders, his wealth of experience and design philosophy positions EXP to further its capabilities to deliver quality buildings to serve the public’s needs with a focus on design excellence across all disciplines,” he continued.
Previously serving as the Chief Architect of the Great Lakes Region and Director of the Design & Construction Division, GSA, Bob utilized his extensive knowledge of federal architecture, design and construction policy and innovation to oversee more than three billion dollars in new construction. His contributions included the new construction of five courthouses, five Land Ports of Entry, eight federal buildings and over thirty capital modernization projects for federal facilities.

Bob is a graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology and a licensed architect in the state of Illinois. He was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture’s College of Fellows in 2016 and is an active member of numerous professional architecture organizations including the American Institute of Architects, Construction Management Association of America, Docomomo, The Mies Van Der Rohe Society and The Association for Preservation Technology.
