The new 320-bed Humber Meadows Long-Term Care Home at Humber River Hospital is one of a few key projects that fills a long-standing need for long-term care facilities in Ontario. This project was part of the Accelerated Build Pilot Program by Infrastructure Ontario, which aims to recommit resources to long-term care in the region. Under design-build partner EllisDon, EXP provided mechanical, electrical, IT, security, structural and energy modeling design services for this critical project in North York, Toronto.
Due to limited land availability and the cost associated with procuring land, construction of long-term care projects can be challenging. Because Humber River Hospital already owned the land on which this facility was built, the team was able to avoid the land procurement process.
In addition to the conventional design, bid and build process, the team conducted an accelerated design build process with the initial design requirements through collaboration with Infrastructure Ontario and the hospital. This method, along with avoiding land procurement, allowed the team to shave months off of the overall schedule and still meet modern design standards, which include features like private or semi-private rooms, full air conditioning for the building, a higher level of emergency power backup and advanced technology systems.
The final building is approximately 250,000 square feet and has six floors, with the first floor acting as a space for social activities and services for residents, including meeting and greeting spaces, a dining room and a hair salon. The next five floors include resident rooms with spaces for dining, activities and medical care.
Located near this facility is a Reactivation Care Centre, which helps patients who are waiting for a long-term care facility, but no longer need acute care. The creation of Humber Meadows Long-Term Care Home addresses capacity issues within Ontario’s long-term care system and decreases patients’ time spent on long-term care waitlists.
