EXP has supported two Florida county school districts in securing funding for new energy programs through the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of State and Community Engagement Programs. The DOE has invested $190 million into the Renew America’s Schools Prize and Grant, which gives selected K-12 school districts across the country funding to implement energy-saving and cost-saving features.
EXP conducted comprehensive energy assessments at 126 school buildings for Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Broward County Public Schools and helped both districts secure funding through Renew America’s Schools. Broward County Public Schools were awarded prize money and Miami-Dade County Public Schools were additionally selected to proceed with upgrades. Across campuses, 74 school buildings located in Miami-Dade County will undergo updates.
The goal of this program is to provide resources to high-need communities so that they can support their students and staff. Through partnerships with private companies, utility companies, labor unions and other government offices, schools will receive energy upgrades such as building envelope repairs and lighting and HVAC updates. These upgrades will enhance energy performance, improve indoor air quality and reduce operating costs, all of which contribute to an overall clean and comfortable environment that is conducive to learning.
“We are thrilled to work with the Miami-Dade County and Broward County school districts to enhance their school buildings. The program will create safer, cleaner and more equitable environments for students and staff to learn and teach,” said EXP’s Senior Energy and Sustainability Manger Haleh Moghaddasi, Ph.D., Assoc. AIA, LEED GA.
