The new Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre opened to the public in January 2025. A long-time client of EXP, Sunnybrook is a recognized hub for medical research and education. EXP has worked on this project since 2014, and we are proud to see it reach its final form. EXP provided structural, geotechnical and hydrogeological engineering services for this project.
The Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre is a state-of-the-art research and treatment facility with a focus on brain disorders. The new 120,000 square foot facility provides space for research in psychiatry, neurology, imaging, pharmacology, neurosurgery, geriatric health and other related fields. Bringing together these various areas of expertise in one building allows patients requiring specialized care to receive treatments and see specialists across disciplines in one facility. This lessens the burden on patients and enhances the level of care specialists can provide.
The building’s open design creates a modern and bright atmosphere for patients and staff. Along with the inviting design, the building houses resources that allow for excellent patient care. The building has 47 hospital beds, activity and exercise spaces, three exterior courtyards and a classroom for patients who are completing schoolwork during their treatment.
“After working on this project for years, we are thrilled to see the Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre open to the public. This facility will revolutionize the way complex neurological disorders are treated and researched, leading to an even better patient experience, which is always the central focus of our healthcare projects,” said Luke Bowen, P.Eng., EXP’s lead structural engineer on the project.
