The Saint-Georges Multifonctional Sport Complex was recognized with the People’s Choice Award at the Ordre des architectes du Québec’s Prix d’excellence en architecture awards. The OAQ’s Architecture Awards of Excellence recognize the architectural quality of projects that are completed throughout Quebec.
The 76,200 SF complex consisted of an extension to Saint-Georges high school and was built through a collaboration between an architectural consortium made up of ABCP Architecture + Marie-Lise Leclerc Architecte + Bilodeau Baril Leeming Architectes. EXP contributed to the project with civil, structural, and geotechnical services.
Designed to match the original 1974 building, the new construction made it possible to add four classrooms, two training rooms, a ten-lane competition pool, a double gymnasium, locker rooms, bleachers and a multipurpose room. An amphitheatre with tiered benches was also built outside the building.
To reinforce the importance of health, the facility has inclusive and sustainable features including the use of wood in several locations to enhance the building’s aesthetic appeal while reducing the carbon footprint. The project also stands out for the use of skylights to provide natural lighting and the construction of two underground retention basins to reduce the flow of stormwater into the city’s sewer system.
Thanks to those who voted for the project, and congratulations to all involved.
