In Duluth, Minnesota, EXP is providing design services including architecture, structural, MEP, lighting design, security and communications, sustainability and civil engineering services for a new replacement air traffic control tower (ATCT) at Duluth International Airport. EXP also provided assistance with grant funding and community outreach efforts.
The new tower will replace the existing tower that was built in the 1950s, making it the third oldest ATCT in the US. The existing tower is in a state of disrepair and does not meet the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) standards or line-of-sight requirements. ATCTs are highly technical with significant equipment in a small area, making EXP’s fully integrated architecture and engineering practice the ideal team to successfully execute these projects.
In addition to improving airport operations, the project will also be a prominent addition to Duluth’s skyline. EXP’s design is contextual with the existing airport and draws inspiration from the form and colors of the large shipping vessels that are the heart of Duluth’s rich history. The project is also designed to achieve LEED Silver status. “EXP has vast experience in ATCT projects, and we are excited to continue to build on that expertise with this important project for the airport and Duluth. We are proud to contribute to the city and positively enhance the skyline with this critical project,” said EXP Senior Project Manager Horeya Czaplewski, AIA.
EXP has worked on ATCTs across the United States and Canada and is currently designing eight new ATCTs.
