EXP was recently awarded two Project Excellence Awards from the London & District Construction Association (LDCA) in Ontario for Fanshawe College and West 5 – Helio. Fanshawe College

Fanshawe College is the largest community college in Southwestern Ontario. In 2015, they decided to transform the former Kingsmill’s Department Store into a downtown campus. The new building houses their Schools of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts and Information Technology.
The original façade of the Kingsmill store was retained and presented unique challenges for maintenance and restoration. The new building, which incorporates some of the original features now welcomes 1,600 students to its campus. EXP was the engineering consultant, tasked to manage the challenging soil and groundwater issues. EXP conducted the geotechnical investigation and performed the quality assurance tasks including vibration monitoring during construction. Innovative solutions were provided to minimize the groundwater inflow into the deep basement and the construction throughout the existing century old buildings with difficult shoring conditions. EXP also assisted with the design of the backup mechanical sump pumping system. In addition, the team performed building envelope consultation and reviews throughout the project.
The project was completed in 2019 and the construction cost was $66M.
West 5 – Helio

Located in West London is the West 5 community, developed by Sifton Properties. The sustainable, interconnected 114-unit residential structure community was designed to provide a green solution for modern living.
Features include solar powered electrical arrays and geothermal heating and cooling systems. The building is a 10-story structure and is 77% more energy efficient than a conventional building.
Sifton Properties retained EXP to perform geotechnical and environmental site assessment for this parcel of land within the West 5 residential community. Ellis Don Corporation was the construction manager for this project. During construction, EXP performed quality assurance services such as geotechnical examinations and material testing. EXP also provided building envelope consultation for the curtain walls to maintain the exterior and interior functions. The design was optimized to provide a cost-effective solution within the construction budget.
